The Hindu pilgrim town of Gangotri, which is the origin of the sacred River Ganges, attracts many tourists every year. One of the four sites constituting the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, the town is named after the the Gangotri temple which was originally built by Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa. The town is located on the northernmost part of the state of Uttarakhand close to the Indo-Tibetan border in Uttarkashi district.

According to Indian mythology, After slaying the demons on earth The King Sagar decided to stage an Ashwamedha Yajna as a proclamation of his supremacy. For this, he sent his horse across the earth accompanied by his sons. The horse which was to be taken on an uninterrupted journey around the earth was to be accompanied by the King's 60,000 sons born to Queen Sumati and one son Asamanjas born of the second queen Kesani.
The King of Heaven, Lord Indra feared the power of King Sagar and to stop him, he stole the horse and tied it to the ashram of Sage Kapil , who was then in deep meditation. When the 60,000 sons saw the horse in Kapil's ashram they got furious and started to attack the hermitage. On hearing the disturbance Sage Kapil opened his eyes in anger and all the 60,000 sons of King Sagar had all perished by the curse of sage Kapil, except for prince Asamanjas. Bhagiratha, the grandson of King Sagar, is believed to have meditated to please the Goddess Ganga enough to cleanse the ashes of his ancestors, and liberate their souls, granting them salvation or Moksha.
Gangotri is the highest temple of Goddess Ganga and one of the four dhams of Uttarakhand state. Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,048mts above sea level. Gangotri offers scenic splendors of rugged terrains, gushing water of Bhagirathi River and snow clad peaks. The place holds great importance amongst Hindus. Gangotri remains opened from May and get closed on the day of Diwali festival.
The temple town of Gangotri is located just 97 km from Uttarkashi. Gangotri is believed to be the site where Ganges descended to Earth on the matted locks of Lord Shiva. The place also houses the temple of Vishwanath and Kuteti Devi.
The marble built 20 feet high temple of Gangotri is around 300 years old. This temple devoted to Goddess Ganga was built in the 18th century by a Gurkha commander Amar Singh Thapa. In the 20th century, the Maharaja of Jaipur refurbished the shrine.
You can proceed to Tapovan and Nandanvan after reaching Gaumukh Glacier. Astounding views of Shivling and other major peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas are distinctly visible from Tapovan.
A natural rock Shivling submerged under water is an attractive tourist spot of Gangotri. It can be easily seen when winters are on their way because the water level decreases during this period. According to myths and legends this was the place where Lord Shiva was sitting when he received Ganga in his matted locks.
Jalmagna Shivling, which remains immersed in the Gangotri during summer, is one of the major attractions of Gangotri. This natural Shivling located near the Gangotri Temple is visible only during the winter, when the water level goes down. It is believed that at this very site, Lord Shiva held the river Ganges in his matted locks.
Bhagirathi Shila is the rock, where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated. This stone near the temple of Ganga signifies the site where.
The Pandav Gufa can be reached after a trek of 1.5 km from Gangotri. This very site is believed to be the place, where the Pandavas of Mahabharata meditated on their way to Kailash.
Gauri Kund and Surya Kund lie on either side of an iron bridge located half a kilometre ahead of the Gangotri Temple. Surya Kund is known for the Surya Kund waterfalls.
This is considered to be the precise source of the Bhagirathi river later called as river Ganga. The place resembles Cow's mouth hence the name. Gaumukh is the second largest glacier in India, Siachen being the first. The dip in the ice cold water of Ganga is supposed to be very sacred and holy. This dip is supposed to wash away all your sins and lease you new life. The trek to this glacier is easy but it goes through rocky path.
