Kedarnath is a Hindu holy town located in the Himalayas, about 3584m above sea level near the head of river Mandakini, and is flanked by breathtaking.

Kedarnath hosts one of the holiest Hindu temples, the Kedarnath Temple, and is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims from all over the world, being one of the four major sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open only between the end of April to Kartik Purnima (the autumn full moon).

Kedarnath is named after King Kedar who ruled in the Satya Yuga. He ruled the seven continents and was a very saintly king. He had a daughter named Vrinda who was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. The temple itself is quite an exquisite example of stone work. Houses the lingam, a symbol of the Hindu God Shiva. The temple is located among astonishing mountain landscape surrounded by peaks that are over 6000 m in elevation.

History

Gaurikund

Gaurikund, among the famous pilgrim centres, is located en route to the Kedarnath shrine. Situated at an altitude of 1,982 m, this holy place houses an ancient temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to a legend, it is believed that Parvati meditated at this destination for a long time so as to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Lord Shiva accepted to marry Parvati at this place and married her in Trijuginarayan. There is also a natural thermal (hot water) spring located at Gaurikund by the same name. It is believed that a dip in this pond makes a person pure. Additionally, after a dip, a holy darshan in the shrine would fulfil all their desires. This destination also serves as a starting point of a trek to Kedarnath.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Shankaracharya Samadhi, the grave of Adi Guru Shankaracharya, is one of the most popular tourist attractions. Located slightly behind the Kedarnath Temple, it is also one of the most visited places in Kedarnath.Adi Shankaracharya was a great scholar and a saint who established four sacred dhams in India and after that he went to his Samadhi at an early age of 32. Commencing from the Jyotirmath Ashram located at Badrinath; it is a popular belief that Shankara took a journey to the mountainous terrain of Kedarnath. This place has fated to be his ultimate resting place. He was accompanied by four of his most beloved disciples but then Shankara insisted on carrying the journey alone for the residual part. At present, there is a spring of hot water, which is said to be created by Shankara. This spring of hot water was created so as to remove the suffering of his disciples, caused due to the extremes of climate.

Vasuki Tal

Located at a distance of about 8km from Kedarnath Temple and at an elevation of 3584 m, the lake is very picturesque and is surrounded by alpine mountains and offers panoramic views of the nearby Chaukhamba peaks.

Sonprayag

The holy site of Sonprayag lies on the confluence of River Basuki and River Mandakin. The place has great religious significance because there is a legend that the holy waters of the lake can help one attain "Baikunth Dham."

Agastyamuni Temple

Agastyamuni Temple, located at a distance of around 20 km from Rudraprayag, is a noted tourist spot of religious significance in the state of Uttarakhand. Perched at a height of 1,000 m this famous spot is situated along the bank of the beautiful river Mandakini. Famed for the temple in the name of sage Agastya, it is also believed that the sage had meditated here for almost one year.

Locally known as Agasteshwar Mahadev, the temple is consecrated to sage Agastya. The images of Hindu deities present inside this temple have been carved out on the stones of the walls. In addition, the place is also known for the fairs being organised here. Agastyamuni plays a host for a large fair that takes place during the festival of Baisakhi. During this fair, several devotees throng here so as to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi, while they worship and pay their obeisance to the deity.

Besides being a place of religious importance, tourists visiting here can also engage in fishing on the banks of river Mandakini. In addition, the town of Agastyamuni also serves as a base for Pawan Hans helicopter services. These services are available to Kedarnath Temple.

Bhairav Nath Temple

Bhairav Nath Temple, located within the vicinity of the main temple complex, is one of the most popular temples lake extends after Kedarnath temple. Dedicated to God Bhairav, the temple is located to the south of the main temple. In kedarnath, the God,bhairavnath called as Kshetrapal (guardian deity of kedarnath temple). Bhairav Nath Temple is well known for our religious Importency. According to a belief, during winter months due to the heavy rainfall, when the Kedarnath temple remains closed, the main temple complex is guarded by the deity placed in Bhairav Nath temple.

Panch Kedar

Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar are the five most important temples of Lord Shiva in the Garhwal Himalayas. They are known as Panch Kedar.
